Have you ever shared too much information in a job interview? Maybe you didn’t think so at the time, but after the fact, you realized that you might have said something the job interviewer didn’t need to know. Sometimes our nerves get the best of us and we might divulge a little bit too much information to our potential future employer, which can hurt your chances at getting the job.

So, what is too much information in a job interview?

Sharing personal stories that don’t relate to the position you’re interviewing for.

If you aren’t asked about your personal life in the job interview, there’s no reason to let the hiring manager know that you have two kids, a dog, and a cat. It’s also a good idea to keep sensitive topics such as politics and religion off the table, even if the subjects are in current events.

Telling the hiring manager about your bad habits at work.

Do you lack motivation or get distracted easily? Leave any bad habits you may have out of the conversation. Remember, you only have a short time to make a good impression and showcase why you’re the right person for the job.

Telling the hiring manager what your weaknesses are without them asking you for the information.
